Gokan no Ge

Gyohatsunenju, Gokan no Ge
( Meal Sutra )

Japanese is here

All:
Buddha was born at Kapilavastu,
Enlightened at Magada,
Taught at Harana,
Entered nirvabana at Kuchira,
Now we open Buddha Tathagata's eating bowls;
May donors, receivers, and offerings
All be freed from self-clinging
With all sentient beings.

Leader:
In the midest of the three treasures,
With all sentient beings,
Let us recite the names of Buddha.

All:
Homage to the boundless Dharmakaya Vairochana Buddha,
To complete Sambhogakaya Vairochana Buddha,
The future Maiitreya Buddha,
All Buddhas past, present, and future in the ten directions,
The Mahayana Saddharma Pundarika Sutra,
The great compassionate Avalokitesvara Bodhisattava,
The many Bodhisattava Mahasattvas,
The Maha Prajna Paramitta.

Leader at breakfast:
This meal of ten advantages gives up physical and spiritual
well-being and promotes pure practice.

Leader at lunch:
This food of three virtures and six tastes we offer to
Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, and to all life in every world.

Gokan No Ge

First, innumerable labors have brought us this food
We should know how it came to us.

Second, as we receive this offering, we should consider
Whether our virture and practice deserve it.

Third, as we desire the natural condition of mind
To be free from clinging.

Fourth, we must be free from greed,
To support our life take this food.

Fifth, to attain our way we take this food

(lunch only)
All evil spirits, we give you this offering
This food will pervade everywhere.

First, this food is for the three treasures,
Second, for our parents, teatures, leaders, and homeland
Third, for all beings in the six worlds,
Thus we eat this food with everyone.
We eat to end all evil,
To practice good,
To save all sentient beings,
And to accomplish the Buddha way.

The water with which we wash these bowls tastes like ambrosia.
We offer it to the various spirits to satisfy them.
Om, Makurasai, Sowaka.

Leader:
In this world of emptiness
May we exist in muddy water with purity like a lotus
Nothing surpasses the boundless mind
Thus we bow to Buddha.
